Young Peoples Learning Center is the oldest privately owned child care center in Fort Collins. We have been in our building at 405 Mathews Street since 1978 and are committed to improving THIS community through our work. We know the way to improve the world is through our children, and it starts with our commitment to quality and community. We recognize that we have a lot to offer to our community as well as that this community is rich in resources to offer us. Take a look at some of the ways we are involved!
Our administrators sit on the board of the Early Childhood Council of Larimer County and work hard every day to make sure our community focuses on the importance of early childhood education. The Early Childhood Council of Larimer County is a nonprofit organization that convenes professionals, families and policy-makers to raise awareness about issues impacting children from birth to age eight. In addition, Early Childhood Council coaches are in our classrooms about once per week to support our teachers and programs. We take constant advantage of trainings and grants for professional development and we utilize all programs accessible to us for quality improvement.
Larimer Center for Mental Health and Young Peoples Learning Center have teamed up to provide an additional level of support to the social and emotional development of children and their families. Children enter kindergarten ready to learn when they are more than academically prepared. Their Early Childhood Specialists have made themselves available to staff and families at Young Peoples Learning Center as part of our Whole Child Project which aims to create a model which works for all Early Childhood Education programs to use to promote emotionally healthy childhoods
Be Local is an exciting partnership for us. Through this partnership we are able to connect with other local businesses for services, programs and opportunities we would not otherwise get to be a part of. Young Peoples Learning Center is grateful to be working with an organization that shares our love of this community and keeping our time, money and energy local.
Climate Wise is a new partnership for Young Peoples Learning Center. We are the ONLY child care center working with this program. We have always been committed to finding ways to do our part, whether it be through solar panels or teaching the next generation about earth friendly concepts! Now we have some help in assessing and supporting our efforts. We are committed not only to the education of families of Fort Collins, but to the health of the environment they live in.
Young Peoples Learning Center is an active member of the Downtown Business Association. We attend monthly meetings to keep up on events in the downtown area, participate in community events (like the Saint Patrick’s Day Parade!) and offer discounts to employees of other DBA members. We appreciate being closely tied to our downtown roots and call on local businesses for support of our families. Last year we asked some downtown businesses to help us reward families who participated in our “600 Book Challenge” and the response was amazing! Businesses provided everything from free ice cream certificates to kazoos. We feel lucky to be connected with this area.
Hand Up Cooperative has provided Young Peoples Learning Center with employees who complete projects around our buildings, freeing teachers spend more time engaging with the students. Hand Up Cooperative was founded in 2008 to address the need for a job search and placement program specifically tailored to the needs of the homeless and nearly homeless people in Fort Collins. The most direct route to securing stable housing is to find a job. The Hand Up Cooperative program provides the client with the skills necessary to locate job opportunities, interview successfully and once on the job, stay employed. Since its founding in 2008, Hand Up Cooperative has placed 90 individuals in secure jobs. Over 50 of them have stayed employed for at least a year.
